Roberta Vinci is another Italian player who, like her compatriot Francesca Schiavone before her, seems to be getting better the closer she gets to 30.

Turning professional in 1999, it took her another six years to break into the top 100 of the rankings.

In 2007 she lifted her first title – in Bogota on clay, her strongest surface. Her second title came in 2009 in Barcelona, her favourite tournament, and the following year she reached the final again but lost to Schiavone.

In 2011 she captured the Barcelona tournament again as well as picking up two more singles titles and two doubles titles with fellow countrywoman Sara Errani.

They both surprised everyone by getting to the final of the Australian Open in 2012, to become the joint world no1 players at Doubles.
