After watching the legendary Monica Seles play on television, five-year-old Ana Ivanovic decided that she wanted to be a tennis player – and in 2003 turned professional aged 16.
In January 2005 the Serbian star captured her first professional title in Canberra, Australia and later that year surprised everyone by reaching the French Open quarter-finals.
Roland Garros is her favourite Grand Slam, where she finished runner-up to Justine Henin in 2007 but in 2008 went one step further by lifting the title with a final victory over Russia’s Dinara Safina that also earned the world no1 spot – alas only held onto for a handful of weeks.
Despite all the early promise, Ivanovic who has fought hard in a bid to return to a regular position amongst the world’s top 10.
