Jade Windley delivered the knockout blow for France’s Stephanie Foretz Gacon, the world no77, in qualifying on Sunday.
The Brighton-based Brit, looked down and out to Foretz Gacon, who made the last 16 on grass at Birmingham last week, but battled on to make a mockery of being ranked world no543 to pull off a sensational 4-6 7-6 6-1 success.
“I was very nervous at the start – this is definitely the biggest win of my career and it feels amazing.
“Last week I won against a top 150 player but today tops it by a long way.
“This is my first WTA event, so it took me a while to relax and play my game rather than going for outright winners – and it seemed to work.
“I’ve had the best few days being here in Eastbourne. With living and training down the road in Brighton this is very much like a home event for me, so it’s great to do so well.”
